5 Tage Serendipity

Da ich nun schon ein paar Tage Serendipity verwende, hier mal ein kurzes Resumee und ein Vergleich zwischen Wordpress und Serendipity.
Der Umstieg von WP zu S9Y, war wie erwartet keine all zu großer Act. Allerdings sollte man ein paar Sachen erwähnen, mit denen man bei einem Umstieg rechnen muss.

Wenn man von WP kommt, gibt es in Serendipity ein Import-Tool das die Daten importiert. Allerdings hat dieses Tool ein paar Merkwürigkeiten. Als Datenbankserver sollte man 127.0.0.1 eingeben anstatt localhost zu verwenden, das gilt es erst einmal herauszufinden, dannach wird in Sekundenschnelle alles importiert, inkl. Kommentare und User.

Zeichen-Codierung: Wenn man dann importiert hat, wird man ggf. feststellen das die Sonderzeichen alle verballert sind. Auch wenn man alles auf UTF-8 stellt und auch auf dem Server alles auf UTF-8 läuft scheint es von WP her noch Probleme zu geben. Das lässt sich anscheinend nur über einen kleinen Hack lösen. Einfach die WP-Datenbank in UTF-8 "dumpen" und dann erst importieren.

Mit dem Template gibt es kaum Probleme, das meiste ist schon damit gelöst in dem man die Daten kopiert.

Verwaltung: Die Verwaltung von Serendipity ist etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig. Das Admin-Interface orientiert sich eher nicht am Gedanken der Usability, alles wird eher irgendwie rein gepackt. Wenn man von WP kommt, eher unschön.

IE: UTF-8 != UTF-8

Da ich zur Zeit an einem Webdesign für ein Projekt an meiner Schule arbeite, stieß ich auf eine kuriose Sache. Es geht um die Browser-Darstellung von Umlauten in einer UTF-8 codierten HTML-Datei.
Programmiert habe ich unter Linux mit dem Standard GNOME-Editor Gedit. Da der Standard-Zeichensatz meiner Linux-Installation UTF-8 ist, ist das auch die Voreinstellung in der Gedit seine Dateien speichert.
Kurz und gut während ich also die HTML-Dokumente mit Inhalt füllte, dachte ich das Umschreiben der Sonderzeichen wäre überflüssig, da ich ja eh UTF-8 verwende. Auch beim Testen in verschiedenen Browsern schien das gar kein Problem zu sein. Selbst unter Windows wurden die Sonderzeichen korrekt dargestellt, zumindest mit Opera und Firefox. Doch dann die Überraschung, Internet Explorer 7 (und auch 6) weigerten sich die Sonderzeichen darzustellen.
Ich fand das zunächst etwas befremdlich, da ja auch im Doctype "utf-8" angegeben war. Ich dachte dann eben, das dass mit UTF-8 wohl mit IE nicht richtig funktioniert und entschloss mich die Sonderzeichen mit den entsprechenden HTML-Codes zu ersetzen (also ä usw.).
Dann tat es natürlich auch im IE. Erst als ich dann unter Windows eine Datei mit mit dem Editor öffnete und wieder abspeicherte, wurde mir bewusst, das IE wohl doch UTF-8 darstellt. In der Datei standen nämlich die Umlaute im Klartext und wurden trotz UTF-8 (zumindest behauptet das der MS-Editor) richtig dargestellt.

Stefan Horning: Ein diff hat wohl auch gereicht. Irgendwie macht da msedit noch ein unsichtbares Leerzeichen vor die erste Zeile. Das scheint zu helfen.

wieland: Ich habe alle Dateien mit notepad als UTF-8 abgespeichert. Bei mir sind die Sonderzeichen zwischen den Bildern dennoch als Rechtecke zu sehen. In München hat ein Kollege die Seiten aufgerufen, und sie waren richtig eingestellt. Nun dachte ich, ich habe Die Einstellung Ansicht->Codierung->UTF-8 nicht gehabt. Aber gefehlt! Es muss eine andere Einstellung geben, oder liegt es daran, dass er den Zeichensatz seiner Muttersprache, Chinesisch, installiert hat und damit die Modifikation zusammenhängt???

Stefan Horning: Dein Beschreibungs ist mir etwas zu schwammig um konkret zu antworten. Wo werden denn die Sonderzeichen falsch dargestellt? Im notepad sind sie ja wohl richtig.

Meintest du jetzt das die Sonderzeichen chinesische Schriftzeichen sind, oder war das mit dem chinesisch nur so erwähnt? Ansonsten könnte natürlich auch nur der chinesische Font fehlen. Dann wäre es allerdings kein Zeichensatz Problem.

wieland: Die IE7 Darstellung ist bei mir und dem Kollegen unterschiedlich, obwohl wir ja vom Server denselben Code geliefert bekommen sollten. Ich meinte es liegt daran, dass ich die IE Einstellung (wie beschrieben) nicht vorgenommen hätte; das war aber ein Irrtum. Was also gibt es noch, dass 2 verschiedene IE7 dieselben Zeichen unterschiedlich interpretieren??? Fehlt etwas an meiner IE Installation??? Es handelt sich im die Sonderzeichen zwischen den Bildern auf meiner Homepage www.guffert.net. Ist u.U. mit dem chinesischen Zeichensatz noch etwas installiert, was mir fehlt???

Peter Körner: Es handelt sich dabei um die UTF-8 Signatur, die am Anfang einer UTF-8 Codierten Datei steht und eine Anwendung auf die verwendete Codierung hinweist. Für Standard-UTF-8 lautet dieser 0xEF 0xBB 0xBF. Der IE benötigt im Standards-Conform-Mode diese Signatur und auch GEdit kann diese bestimmt erzeugen.

Achim: Danke für den Beitrag! Ich hatte gerade das Gleiche Problem! Sobald ich meine Datei mit Notepad gespeichert habe (auf deinen Tipp hin), funktioniert alles!

Netbook und so

Nachdem ich seit ca. zwei Wochen im Besitz eines Netbooks bin, möchte ich auch hier mal über meine Erfahrungen berichten. Besonders auch zu Betriebssystemen die sich für solche Rechner anbieten.

Hardware:
Ich habe mich für ein Eee-PC Modell von ASUS entschieden. Nach einiger Recherche scheint wohl das Modell 1005HA-M das mit derzeit bestem Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis zu sein. Nachdem dessen knapper Vogänger plötzlich nichtmehr verfügbar war, habe ich dann dieses Modell erstanden, dass trotz Windows-XP™ Lizenz auch günstiger war. Außerdem hat das M-Modell einen matten Bildschirm (also auch für draußen geeignet), eine lange Akkulaufzeit (angeblich 8Std.) und eine angenehme Größe, so dass man noch gut drauf tippen kann.
Nach ca. 2-wöchiger Benutzung bin ich eigentlich auch ganz Zufrieden mit der Hardware, auch wenn der Akku eigentlich noch nie 8 Stunden durchgehalten hat, hält er doch einen Uni-Tag ohne Netzteil durch.
Note: Der Rechner wird zwar nur mit Windows ausgeliefert, alle Komponenten funktionieren aber problemlos mit Linux (inkl. WLAN und Webcam).

Lars Strojny: Alberta Cross, nice one. Ich hab auf einem älteren Model schlicht Ubuntu mit einem angepassten Kernel verwendet. Das lieft/läuft ganz gut - heute verwendet Madame die Kiste.

Setting up Empathy for SIP usage (example: Sipgate)

I recently signed up for a sipgate base account. If you choose the basic tarif you can get a free landline number without paying anything, as long you don't use it to call out. This handy for people with have a phone flat to call landline phones.

Sipgate uses standard SIP technology to forward calls to VoIP clients. Hence you can actually use it with any client soft- and hardware supporting SIP (s.th. which wouldn't be possible with Skype). Sipgate has a own windows client you can use if you use windows, which is already pre-configured for the use with sipgate. If you use other plattforms you have to set it up yourself.
For Linux there are two major SIP apps. One is Ekiga* and one is Empathy (relying on the telepathy framework). If you want to use Empathy for SIP, you should first install the telepathy-sofiasip package from the repository. Otherwise nothing happens when you add a new SIP account.

In debian based Distros just use: apt-get install telepathy-sofiasip

After that you can just add a new SIP account with Empathy, using your details from the login area of sipgate.

andy: ATTENTION!

Some distros might still come with Empathy 2.26 or 2.28, on which I had absolutely no success in getting things going.

Not until I installed 2.30.2 everything worked fine. So be warned to not tear out your hair in getting this to work on those said older versions.

Show Facebook Calendar in your Favourite Calendar Software

I was not aware until yestereday is that it's possible to import your Facebook Calendar into any Calendar Software / PIM that supports iCal and Web calendars.
To make that possible you just have to open your Facebook Event overwiew:

By clicking on that link you can open a pop-up that presents to you the link you will need to insert, when you create a new calendar in your favourite calendar client. Almost all PIM and calendar apps support iCal nowadays.

Telecolumbus: Internet nur für Selbstabholer!

Als ich Ende April Internet für meine neue Wohnung bestellte entschied ich mich für den lokalen Kabelnetzbetreiber, nämlich Telecolumbus. Meine priortät war, das ich in der neuen Wohnung Internet nahtlos weiterbenutzen konnte und deshalb schon vorher per Internet bestellte. Deshalb entschied ich mich auch für den Kabelanschluss, ich konnte im Internet über die Adresse bestellen, die Dose war schon in der Wohnung, Internet für diese Adresse verfügbar, d.h. es hätte eigentlich schnell gehen müssen. Allerdings hatte sich nach einer Woche außer der obligatorischen Bestätigungsmail überhaupt nichts getan. Das machte mich mistrauisch, da mir nichtmal das verprochene Modem zugeschickt worden war und das sollte nun wahrlich nicht länger als 2-3 Werktage dauern.
Ein Nachfragen bei der Hotline erbrachte nur eine kurze Auskunft, das ein neuanschluss bis zu vier (ich wiederhole 4) Wochen dauern könnte! Mehr Informationen konnte mir man anscheinend nicht geben. In den nächten Wochen geschah wirklich überhaupt nichts. Eines Tages ging ich dann mal zu einer nahen Telecolumbus Filiale hin. Dort wurde mir auch promt gesagt das ein neuer Anschluss eigentlich sofort gehen müsste. Der Mitarbeiter vor ort machte auch gleich meinen Vertrag klar, das Modem konnte ich sofort selbst mitnehmen (keine Portokosten) und zu Hause sofot lossurfen. Mein Internet Auftrag htte sich wohl in die ewigen Jagdgründe der Telecolumbus Verwaltung verabschieded!

Merke: Wer einen Telecolumbus Anschluss haben möchte, sollte sich den am besten persönlich in der Filiale abholen. Die Internetbeauftragung ist wohl nur placebo!

Crisper Thunderbird Logo in GNOME-Do

If you are a GNOME-Do user, you may have noticed that the Mozilla Thunderbird® icon doesn't look nice when appearing in GNOME-Do. That's because the logo is upscaled to fit the size of the Do bar. That scaling is made necessary, because the icon-size of the icon that Thunderbird puts into /usr/share/pixmaps/ by default is too small. To get a crisp logo in Do the logo should be about 128x128px (like the firefox.png you might find in pixmaps). To replace the thunderbird.png with a larger icon you can take the 256x256px icon from /usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.6/chrome/icons/default/default256.png. Copy that file into your home-directory (or somwhere where you have write permissions). Then use GIMP to scale it down to 128px. After saving and renaming the file to thunderbird.png you can then copy it as root to /user/share/pixmaps/ replacing the old icon.

Copy-command:
sudo cp thunderbird.png /usr/share/pixmaps/

After restarting GNOME-Do, you should see a nice crisp Thunderbird icon. Like that:

Using the printserver of the SMT-G3210 with Linux

To use the build in printserver of the Samsung router SMT-G3210 with Linux, you usuall have to know which print-protocol is used. Since I have the router at home already I wanted to use it for printing over the network. I just had to plug in the usb of my printer into the router and the printer was already recognized, as I could see in the routers webfrontend. Know I didn't know how to set the printer up on my Ubuntu system. Checking out the routers manual I couldn't find any hints. Finally I hit the right protokoll, it's AppSocket/HP JetDirect section you have to use. You just have to enter the IP of the router and press next. After you finished the rest of the normal procedure (choosing the driver/name) it should work.

I hope that helps others finding themselves in the same situation!

Hat wirklich sehr geholfen. Aber leider ist die angegebene IP-Adresse falsch, was jedoch durch eine Google-"Abfrage" schnell gelöst werden konnte.

Keeping the Ubuntu Dark look

Ubuntu Jaunty (9.10) has the nice new dark look for the status icons. But this is only working if you use the "Humanity-Dark" icon theme.

I wanted to have another icon theme, but keep the nice dark status icons. So I had a look at the Humanity-Dark icon folder in /usr/share/icons/ and discovered, that this is only an overlay of the normal Humanity icon theme. So this overlay could be used for my favourite icon theme as well. So I just made a copy of the Humanity-Dark folder (if you want to make a new folder in /usr/share/icons you have to be root of course) and changed the name of the new folder to Colors-Dark (because I want to inherit from the gnome colors theme). In the Colors-Dark folder you have to modify the index.theme file, to use another theme than the Humanity one. First you should change the name to avoid confusion. For example Name=Colors-Dark. After that the important part comes: change the inherit value to your prefered icon theme. For example Inherits=gnome-wise if you want to use gnome wise. That's already everything you have to do. If there is any icon-cache file you better remove and recreate it. You can use gtk-update-icon-cache to create a new cache. Now you have your nice new icons being used, when you choose the Colors-Dark theme, but the dark ubuntu-icons stay.

My Conky Config

A few day ago I stumbled over the desktop widget "Conky". Convinced by the nice configurations some people had running, I decided to give it a shot. Conky is quite flexible and powerful, that's why it has it's own kind of scripting language.
The script for the individual configuration is stored in the .conkyrc file. I spend the last few days tweaking my configuration, starting with the one from here. For my configuration to run you need to install at least parts of the conky-colors package which also delivers you the fonts you need.
I didn't really install the conky-color package though, just downloaded and unpacked it. The scripts I needed I copied into a hidden folder in my home directory (.conky-scripts/). The conkyVinyl Script for the cover art was modified by me. You also need an account for weather.com to use the weather Script, as explained in this post.
I ended up with the design you can see in the screenshot. The fastest way to get my setup is to unpack this ZIP-File in your home-directory and rename conky-scripts to .conky-scripts and conkyWeather.conf in .conkyWeather.conf (after you added your settings in there) and install the three fonts. After that you can use my .conkyrc as provided underneath. I hope you like it!

Rock out with your dock out

A new version of GNOME-Do was just released a few days ago. I already tried it and the new Docky is quite a nice idea. Docky is the new big feature in Do, which offers a panel with starters on it. It's already quite nice to use, and almost ready for productive use. If you already like Do you should give it a try! There are already packages for most Linux-Distros, even a repository for Ubuntu. Have fun!

Note: You have to resart the Do-Deamon before the new features are available.

Rockbox für den Meizu M6

Vor geraumer Zeit habe ich mal über meinen MP3-Player von Meizu berichtet. Damals war die Frage ob und wann es eine Opensource Firmware geben wird. Inzwischen ist es wohl soweit das eine Rockbox version für den M6 kurz vor der Fertigstellung steht. Wer sich also berufen fühlt kann da gerne mitwirken. Es gibt eine eigene Rockbox Wikiseite und diverse Forenthreads [1 & 2] zum Thema.
Die bisherige Firmware ist eigentlich auch schon ganz ordentlich, das einzige Feature was mir bisher noch fehlte war scrobbling support für last.fm.

Color Management coming to GNOME

Color management has finally arrived at the GNOME Desktop. The new piece of software is called gnome color manager and is still pretty young. I heard about it while ago, so after installing Ubuntu 10.04 I found it in the repos and gave it a shot. It looks quite simple and promising. Still a bit unstable (crashes on some clicks) though. Unfortunately I couldn't calibrate my screen, because the color profile (ICC) I had for my screen was not suitable for full color calibration and I don't have any equipment to mesure my screen. But it's a good thing GNOME is getting a color manager, which it opens up to the professional Designers and DTP uses.
